Information, Advice and Guidance

Joint Learning provides an impartial and confidential advice and guidance service to all its clients. We support them in accessing the training most appropriate for their particular requirements, referring to other training providers or support organisations if we are unable to provide what they need. We encourage life long learning and ensure all Joint Learning learners have every opportunity to access it. Full details of this service can be seen in the Information, Advice and Guidance Policy. Joint Learning works to the National IAG Board Principles for Coherent Delivery in Information Advice and Guidance Services.

What is IAG?

Information - Providing written and verbal data on learning and work for service users.

Advice – Over and above information. It may require an explanation of information, how to access and use the information, and how to locate follow-on services.

Guidance – An in-depth interview conducted by a trained adviser which helps the client to explore a range of options, relate information to their own needs and make decisions about their career.

What does IAG do?

  • Assists learners to think about what training or learning they might be interested in

  • Helps them to think about how they can make the most of the skills they have

  • Helps them to make informed decisions about training and learning available to them

  • Helps them to identify and overcome barriers which may stop them achieving their full potential

  • Helps to support and motivate individuals to manage their career development

How is IAG delivered?

Information, advice and guidance may be delivered through a one to one session or through small groups. The role of IAG within Train to Gain is to 'support individuals' lifelong learning and enabling career development and progression'.

Within Train to Gain IAG is delivered at three points;

Getting into learning

This session should clarify that the learner

  • Understands their motivation for engaging in learning or training

  • Understands what the training is about and the adviser is able to help them to overcome any concerns

  • Has the current skills required specifically literacy and numeracy and the course is the right one for them

  • Has been helped to identify any barriers which may hinder their learning

Getting on in learning

This session should clarify that the learner

  • Has received all support that has been identified

  • That they are progressing at a pace suitable to them and that they have had opportunities to ask questions and receive feedback on their progress

  • Identified any aspirations; what are they hoping to achieve personally/professionally?

Moving on from learning

This session will come towards the end of their programme of study. Its purpose is to ensure that the learner has an opportunity to discuss any further ideas they have. It should clarify

  • What further learning and development would be appropriate to help them develop their skills and knowledge further? What opportunities could they consider including higher level qualifications the following areas should be covered within the IAG element of the Individual learning plan discussions with the learner?
